I leaned form this project that I should really focus more on looking at what I'm drawing when I'm drawing from life. While the product at the end didn't really resemble myself, I do think it wound up with a lot of character.

I created this art piece because I wanted to practice working on my shading technique. It means quite a lot to me because I worked hard on it and put a lot of detail into it. I decided to use graphite to create my artwork because as I stated before, I wanted to work on shading; specifically I wanted to work on using the smudging technique because I haven't been using it much recently. I was very familiar with my medium which is another reason I chose it. I often use graphite because I prefer the look of it as opposed to other possible mediums. I chose the dimensions of my piece because I wanted to make it as life size as possible, therefore I created this piece using a full 14" by 11" sheet of paper. I was inspired by the area that I usually create art in. I spend a lot of time there so creating a picture of it seemed meaningful to me. To draw this piece I took a picture of my desk with the things in the drawing on it and used that as a reference picture. My piece is a connection to the shading unit we did, I just switched the technique that I used. I still need to try and overcome properly sizing the things in my drawings. Sometimes when I draw objects the proportions can seem a bit off. Overall I'm pretty happy with my piece. I did have slightly higher expectations but I think over time I will improve. Over the past year I believe I have grown quit a bit in terms of developing art making skills. For example when I shade things; I originally preferred using the smudging technique but over the past couple of months I have started using the hatching technique when drawing. I originally thought smudging looked better but after experimenting with hatching I have decided that I prefer doing that. I have also developed in communicating through art and collaborating. When we did our world hunger piece I collaborated with Katya, and I think we conveyed our message pretty well. We had two bowls represent two halves of the world giving to begging hands. It showed that as a community we can give back to those in need. I do however wish that I had developed more in terms of taking risks and problem solving. The only time I really took risks this year was on the last project when I went over my painting to texture it. It ended up turning out much better than it originally was and it showed that by taking risks that my art skills could improve and fix any problems my artwork had(for example it was too boring).
My favorite art project this year was either the choice project where I painted cherry blossom trees, or the artist inspired project. For both of them I got to use techniques that I had learned before. For the cherry blossoms I got to use one point perspective; I painted the closest trees bigger, and the farthest ones smaller to represent where they were. And for the artist inspired piece I got to use calligraphy to recreate one of Katsushika Hokusai's pieces and I had a lot of fun with it. I never thought I would every try to create art using calligraphy, but this year I got to try that and I think that did help me grow because I now have more skill in terms of calligraphy. While I did have fun with these projects I didn't exactly connect with them that much. This year I didn't really connect with my artwork as much as I would have liked. While I did enjoy doing it, I never really made a piece that I connected with or related to. I hope that next year in AP I can created work that means a lot to me. I thought that this class was a lot of fun and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Therefore the only thing is that I wish that we had more choice projects. I found myself much more engaged in art when I was allowed to have artistic freedom, use different mediums, and got to let my mind sort of wander in terms of ideas. I don't like having to find inspiration from one specific thing, so in terms of the world hunger piece I wished I could have done it on any problem in the world as opposed to just that. But like I mentioned before I loved the class and looked forward to it every day. Art is something that everyone loves even if they don't know it, whether it's visual art, music, literature, or dancing. I don't know one person who doesn't love music, and as for me I happen to love both visual art and music. I'm not musically talented and can't create it, but I am good at drawing; therefore I love it. Music, painting, dancing and obviously writing can convey storylines that can touch the audiences. Whether it's something they've experienced or just something interesting, people can learn from it. I think art is one of the most important things for a community or culture to have in all of its forms because it can convey stories and mindsets from the past, as well as ideas and emotions; therefore it has the ability to change how people think or feel. |
